Duty Free News International’s (DFNI) David Tran sat down with the Westfield team to talk about our holistic approach to capturing a sense of place at the airport and how we’re bringing LA into LAX.

Westfield signed a 17-year Terminal Commercial Manager (TCM) contract with LAWA to operate at the facilities in 2012 by developing, leasing and managing food and beverage, retail, speciality retail and certain services throughout the contract–although the contract has since been extended to 2032 to compensate for the delays and base building work across Westfield’s five of the nine terminals it is governed to manage under the TCM agreement with LAWA. Westfield is not allowed to operate any of the concessions to avoid conflicts of interest.

The first contract (TCM1) governs the international terminals–Tom Bradley International airport (TBIT) and T2, while the second contract (TCM2) governs T1, T3 and T6. Its renovation at TBIT was completed in September 2013, comprising more than 60 luxury retail and dining outlets within the departures lounge, set in two phases. While Westfield completed the redevelopment at T2 in October 2015.

The work hasn’t stopped there for Westfield, with projects over the coming years, including facilitating the commercial side of the huge project with Delta Airlines. The airline will move their entire aeronautical operations from terminals five and six into terminals two and three the middle of next month, where it has plans to install a connector hub to link the two terminals together by 2021. Before then commercial facilities will be built, as it seeks proposals from interested parties at T3 for the development of a multi-unit quick service food court, a bar, two travel essentials kiosk/wall shops and one speciality retail unit, spanning a total of between 15,000sq ft and 20,000sq ft (1,858sq m).
